Babies are worth 6 figures on the open market...
2007-02-20

We went to Safeway to get some food today. While in the freezer section, Rob noticed a baby that didn't seemed to be associated with any of the grown-ups nearby. I'd noticed the stroller, but there were people milling about in the aisle, so I didn't think much of it. A few seconds after Rob said something to me, the aisle had cleared. Completely. Except for the baby.

So, at this point, Rob and I are at a loss as to what to do. We just keep looking at each other, looking at the stroller, and than looking around. I'm wondering if we should go tell someone who works in the store. But I'm still processing the situation, so I haven't mentioned this. By the look on Rob's face, I think he's coming to the same conclusion.

Keep in mind that by this time, the stroller had been sitting there un-attended for at least 3 minutes.

Before we do anything, though, we look over towards the entrance and notice a woman walk in briskly (not running, or hysterical, mind you... just walking quickly) in our direction. So we just sort of canter away, looking back. She grabs the stroller, and turns to walk out of the store. She's completely calm, relaxed, and has a look on her face similar to the look you'd get if you were embarassed because you'd left your shopping bag on the counter.

Clearly, this woman had wandered off, done shopping, gone through check-out, and walked out of the store before realizing that she didn't have her baby with her.

I really have nothing more to say. Process this as you wish.

i don't think you should come to your conclusions as you did here. As you describe it here it seems to me that you're deriving your conclusion just from the look on her face. In particular, I don't think you can make the "Clearly, this woman ..." statement without knowing the woman's side of the story. That said, I think there are _much_ worse cases of negligence than the one described.
